He was banned from writing fiction because it distracted from his studies. The local theater, recognizing Andersen’s talent funded his schooling. He had so little formal education that his spelling and grammar were terrible. For Andersen, “happiness and pain always went hand in hand.”Īfter being rejected as an actor in the local theater, Andersen decided he would write plays. In fact, Andersen would carry the feeling of not fitting in with him all his life, said Lundskær-Nielsen. While Andersen is widely read and translated, his life wasn’t all that happy.Īs a boy, Andersen always felt like an outsider because he preferred reading and theater to playing with boys his age. “His worldwide fame nowadays is from his fairy tales.” “What has he done to deserve such fame and attention?” asked Lundskær-Nielsen. Lundskær-Nielsen began by saying that in 2005, celebrations occurred throughout the world for the bicentennial of Andersen’s birth – the celebrations were the largest ever for a literary figure. At a Kennedy Center lecture on the campus of Brigham Young University, Tom Lundskær-Nielsen, senior lecturer at the University College London, explained a modern view of Andersen’s tales – that they’re not only for children. 1, 2014)-Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales aren’t only stories for children. They’ve grown up spending every summer in this beautiful area of Italy, but after so many years of the same old routine, and with the damper of their father’s death, the prospect of another summer at a dusty dig site in the middle of nowhere is… less than ideal. A few months after the death of their father, American teenagers Gabi and Lia are spending the summer in Tuscany with their archaeologist mother. TROTS revolves around the Betarrini sisters, Gabriella and Evangelia–or Gabi and Lia, for short. WHAT IS “THE RIVER OF TIME SERIES” ABOUT? This post will be the first in a three-part series featuring those three book series, starting with my top favorite, TROTS, and working down. There are a lot of books and series that I love and highly recommend to friends, family, and my social media “friends”, but there are three book series that have stood out to me above the rest for various reasons and now hold this special place in my heart. The River of Time Series, which, for ease of typing and reading, I will hereafter refer to as TROTS, is on my list of Top 3 Favorite Series EVER. I’ve said on this blog multiple times now that I would eventually get around to sharing about one of my favorite book series ever–The River of TIme Series. Candide begins in the German town of Westphalia, where Candide, a young man, lives in the castle of Baron of Thunder-ten-tronckh. I couldn’t engage with a desire for the romance to somehow work out.Įither romance, in fact. I enjoyed the prose – I think Silvia Moreno-Garcia gets better with every book, and at this point I’ll read anything she writes – but I actively wanted Nina to just get the hell out of Loisail and leave the poisonous vipers to themselves. I spent the first half of The Beautiful Ones reading with gritted teeth, getting increasingly frustrated. Like Hector and Nina, it took a while to win me over – but I have consumed the second half in an afternoon, twisting and yelling and ultimately wiping a little tear from my eye. These days, I’m more interested in family and friendship while I like a romantic subplot, it tends to leave me cold as the main event. In romance, half the point is seeing the tropes explored and taking joy in discovering how this couple will work things out. Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: I rarely read romance novels, because I’m frustrated by the narrow paths they necessarily tread. Can she be satisfied within its constraints? But Nina has a mind of her own, and talents that aren’t welcome in polite society. They will usher her into a glittering world of balls and find her a suitable husband. Nina Beaulieu is a debutante, spending the Season with her cousin Gaetan and his glamorous wife Valerie. While I could probably write a dissertation about my love for John Tucker, The Goal wouldn’t be the same without its dynamic lady, Sabrina James. Garrett has always managed to just barely hold on to the number one slot until John Tucker gently nudged his buddy aside and proudly took his place at the top. He swept me off my feet in more ways than one, and may have just topped my favorites list from this series. I fell for Garrett, was wooed by Logan, laughed and cried with Dean, and now I can say I swooned for John Tucker. This series is a tried and true, I-can-re-read-them-a-million-times kind of series for me. It feels so good to have a new Off Campus book in my hands. If he wants a life with the woman of his dreams, he’ll have to convince her that some goals can only be made with an assist. The problem is, Sabrina’s heart is locked up tight, and the fiery brunette is too stubborn to accept his help. It doesn’t hurt that the soon-to-be mother of his child is beautiful, whip-smart, and keeps him on his toes. On the ice, he’s fine staying out of the spotlight, but when it comes to becoming a daddy at the age of 22, he refuses to be a bench warmer. Tucker believes being a team player is as important as being the star. It was this last, surprisingly modern bureaucratic revolution that allowed Philip to accomplish the ""taming of America,"" which, in terms of the distances and modes of travel involved, was his most impressive achievement. From these he resurrects a much more human Philip: the son of the Emperor Charles V striving to live up to his father's example of diplomacy and conquest a man with as many human weaknesses and affections as most others, but gradually forced to bury all under an iron discipline and self-control the King who encouraged the Inquisition and enjoyed a good auto-da-fÉ, all because of his deep and sincere religious faith and, most importantly, the originator of a vast centralized administration that brought all parts of Spain's enormous empire under Philip's personal authority. Although there is some truth to this portrait of Philip, Geoffrey Parker's biographical study attempts to reveal the other elements in the complex character of ""the most potent man in Christendom."" Parker, author of The Army of Flanders and other works, is successful largely because he has been able to systematically go through the Altamira papers, a collection of about five thousand letters and documents in Philip's own hand. In general, Philip II of Spain has not fared well at the hands of historians: he is often represented as a somber, Machiavellian figure, the famed ""black spider"" working night and day to expand the Spanish Empire and to reimpose Catholicism on a European continent split by the Reformation.
